Am spitballing here, but it would be neat if we could click on a thread to view and it opens up in a new window/tab, if the first category has numerous threads.
I'm sure this would require major work, but it was a nice idea to run up the flagpole and see who salutes!

This is simple to do either with the layout system or with some Javascript by adding the following attribute to the thread links: <a href="/" target="_blank">Thread Link</a>
However, you would most likely want to have a plugin do this so an option could made that would allow each user to choose whether they wanted this feature enabled or not because most people would not want this. Also, you should be able to just right click the link and click "open in new tab" or something to that effect. Over time you'll do it so fast you won't even have to think about it.

Just middle click on your mouse on any link anywhere online. This is something you as the user control.
We typically follow this rule. Is it on the same website? Then same window/tab. Is it on a different website? Then a new window/tab.
As the user you can control any link. There wont be an option to change the default. Though as Jordan said you could potentially edit your forum to do this. It would be complex though. Since most users control their browsing experience themselves, you may find you upset members who prefer normal web functionality. Getting in the habit of middle clicking yourself might be the better solution.
Edit: Ctrl + Clicking works in most browsers too.

I usually do that myself out of habit so I'm sure other members do, too. We typically follow this rule. Is it on the same website? Then same window/tab. Is it on a different website? Then a new window/tab. I forgot about that. I link some threads together via URL tweaking and noticed that. Thanks to both for replying. Like I said...spitballing.

The concept I explained about opening a new tab or not based on the same website or not is actually a best practice on the internet. It's not a law by any stretch. But it is what is proper across the internet. And then it's up to users to alter that experience through actions of their own (ctrl clicking or middle clicking, etc).

Thanks, the only reason I brought up the matter was when I moved my Chat up to the Nav Menu to be clicked. In the body of the main page, it opened a new window/tab, but in the menu, it opens up in the same. I actually don't mind either way, but I know some members like navigating around the web while Chat. I reminded them of the new set-up and what to do (C-click or r-click). I usually right-click out of habit.
