Hi,
Could you please consider this as I find important to read what happened on our forums. It'd be nice to make it open in a popup.
Thanks

Hi,
On your admin panel - Settings - Shoutbox = it will list the last ((200 posts)) on your shoutbox
I agree it would be nice to have a link on the shoutbox that would maybe link to the shoutbox on the admin panel for easy access for staff to see the the last 200 posts

That, but also for a simple member. It's nice to log in and see that someone talked about something interesting, then open up the archive and read what have been already discussed.
Thank you for answering Steve.

The Shoutbox is intended to be temporary. If you want permanent content that's what threads are for. But really though, we will add this to our list of future ideas. No guarantee that it will get added, but we will discuss it in depth in the future. Thank you.

Indeed, I try to adapt the forum in a certain extent for the majority of my users. There is a shoutbox called vBShout on vbulletin software. You might want to sneak in with me and take a look for ideas.

We don't take ides from other forum providers. We have a strict policy of not looking at them in fact. We talk directly with members and get feedback from them. You guys tell us what you want and what you think would be great. We then do the research and development of those ideas. That does not include copying other forum services. That's how we stay ahead of them in so many ways. So we are definitely open to your ideas, but we will not be looking at how someone else might do it.

Just to say, I'd like to have this as well. I recently had a guest come onto the forum and start asking questions in our Shout Box, and I did answer them but of course other members were also chatting with each other in there, and it got pushed out and isn't visible anymore. The Guest came back thinking I had ignored their question.
So yeah, I'd like the ability to see the archives in there--even if it was just for members--at least I could tell the guest that they have to register to see the old posts. But they thought they were altogether ignored. xD Also I like to scroll through whenever I log on and see what people were chatting about, and it gets frustrating when it cuts off in the middle.

But they thought they were altogether ignored. xD Also I like to scroll through whenever I log on and see what people were chatting about, and it gets frustrating when it cuts off in the middle. As I explained in Novemeber the shoutbox is intended to be temporary. If you want permanent content that's what threads are for. I understand that the guest was frustrated but there's really nothing we can do about it. The guest should understand that the shoutbox is not permanent, they can witness it disappearing. There's no guarantee that staff were online or that they would look at the shoutbox even if they were. If they needed help they should post on your forum somewhere. That's the nature of the shoutbox. It's like asking for help in a crowded noisy room and getting upset no one heard you. Especially when there are quiet rooms specifically for discussion all around. We don't store the shoutbox data. There is no archive to access. The point of a forum is to post in topics. We added the shoutbox at the request of members but it is not intended to replace threads. We gave admins the ability to see further back in case they need to moderate something. but that doesn't extend past what you see in the admin area. There are certain updates we will make to the shoutbox in the future. This may or may not be one of them. If I was betting I'd say it's not.

I totally understand that, and I'm not trying to be difficult or anything--I know this thread is older, but I'd rather have bumped it than create a new one :]
I agree that the shout box content is supposed to be temporary, and we typically just use it to have casual chatter outside of RP. I do have a guest-friendly board where people are encouraged to ask questions, which I would prefer, but the reality is that guests are going to use the shout box 99% of the time--but your analogy is pretty spot-on, it is quite like yelling in a crowded room for help.
And I have no personal interest in saving tons of old shouts, they're useless and I understand why PB doesn't want to waste the time/space archiving idle chatter. I suppose I wish it saved more than just 20, though. 20 shouts can go by pretty quickly, just between people saying hi, good-night, "lol", etc.
I do understand fully that having an archive available is a little superfluous. I suppose if I were to offer a suggestion to the shout box that might be more realistic, I'd ask for it to store ~30-40 shouts instead of 20.
20 just seems to go by really fast, but if this isn't something that's doable either, I plan to add a note in the Shoutbox regardless, to clarify your sentiments on its content being intentionally temporary--because I've now had another member ask me how they can see old shouts. xD

One of the future shout box upgrades is the ability to specify how many shouts display on the forum side. I don't know what the limits are, but it could just end up being any number up to 200. That won't be until a v5.x update though so I have no details other than that.
