Do you guys just write your codes right in the file you use them in or do any of you use programs to help remember to close tabs and indent and stuff?

Depends on what I'm writing. If it's C++ or C# I use Visual Studio, if it's Java I use Eclipse, if it's Javascript/HTML/CSS I typically use Notepad++ although there are much better ones out there now. I just like Notepad++ because it is so lightweight and supports so many languages. Those are the languages I use regularly, but I always try to use the recommended editor for each language. If I'm using python I'll use the editor that comes with it. You should check out jsbeautifier.org/ for formatting your web coding, it can be very useful.

Depends on the language and computer I'm on at the moment.
Windows: - Eclipse: Scala, Java - Notepad++: HTML, CSS, JS, XML, PHP - IDLE: Python
Mac: - Eclipse: Java - IntelliJ IDEA: Scala, Java - Sublime: HTML, CSS, JS, XML, PHP, Python, C, C++ - TextWrangler: Scala (intellij is a battery killer) - VIM: configuration files of any sort
Linux (Athena specifically): - VIM: everything

I am talking more Javascript and Jqueary...like stuff you'd do here on a PBS forum, but the others are useful too

If you've ever used Eclipse, Aptana may be a good choice. I haven't used it personally, but people at my internship had used it.

Yeah, that's why I never downloaded it, but it may be worth trying now to see what they have done to it. If it has intelliSense it may be worth it.

I personally use VIM for everything. It's lightweight, powerful, and runs in Terminal, so when I'm pushing/pulling to/from git repositories, or creating new Django projects/apps, or needing to ssh into various servers, it's all done from the same program (Terminal) which keeps everything running smoothly and efficiently.
As well, I'm on-the-go a lot (as in, A LOT -- I've been on the road more than I've been in the city I live in this month), and VIM runs quickly and smoothly even when I'm connected through a tethered EDGE (2G) connection in places with very poor connectivity.

Yeah, vim is a great choice in your line of work, although I don't prefer to use it when I'm not having to ssh into servers all the time. It's a great little program, though.

Sublime Text 2 all the way. Both on Windows and Mac.

InType and Notepad 2 or Notepad ++ are the way to go, just a personal preference for what you enjoy and are most comfortable with.

On a mac, so I use either Textmate (2 Alpha) or Sublime Text 2. I bought Textmate and love the software, but Sublime is slowly winning me over. I wish I could have the best features of both
