I am sure this has been suggested...could you please make the @ feature so you just type @ and a search comes up like when you press the @ ubbc? It's really a pain to remember usernames...

While I completely understand what you are asking for we have in fact added a similar feature. This lets you search any member and insert them right into your post. If in the future it become possible to do so in the quick reply while typing we will include it. For now, however, that is not the case. Sorry. You'll just have to make due with the features we've included. If you are using the quick reply, don't forget that you can hover over any display name on the page to get their @ tag.

I know it's there it's just not really that easy to use I think you'll have a lot of complaints about it I don't see how it's not easy to use. Bear in mind that what you were suggesting would (my guess, I'm not a PB developer) need the editor to constantly check what you are typing and check if you've typed an @ symbol and work out that you're wanting to tag something and aren't using it for some other reason, all of which would slow things down...

This is true...however it would be easy to do a quickkey thing for it...Ctrl-2?

Shrike's explanation is actually very accurate. Imagine needing to check every single keystroke that is pressed and run it against an index of every single username registered on a forum. The resources are astounding. Facebook doesn't even attempt to do anything close to that. Their statuses and comments are a fraction of the size of posts here, they aren't formatted, and they only need to check your friends. Most people would barely have any friend count relative to the number of registered members on a normal forum.
What you're asking is extremely server intensive. Right now the technology literally doesn't exist (or at least not at a reasonable cost to ProBoards) that can do this in a timely manner without degrading the quality of our forums.

Ok yea now that I think about it, I know you're right. But what about a quickkey to the ubbc version? Like Ctrl-alt-T would open the function?

That is a great idea, barring one huge problem. When you are typing in the editor you are actually typing into an iframe. Shortcuts don't work in the iframe. There was just another thread where I explained this talking about the post shortcut. So since you would have to click out of the iframe for it to work in the first place you may as well just click the button at that point.
Also, side note. You can't have Ctrl + alt shortcuts. Windows captures that.

Gosh that's annoying....I was actually sorta looking at something earlier with this... www.openjs.com/scripts/events/keyboard_shortcuts/#add_docsIf you were to use this guy's code couldn't you just have the shortcut click the button? Sure here i am talking a plugin...but conceivably Is it that the shortcuts wouldn't work on that page at all because the whole thing is an iframe? Or just the Textarea?

It's because it's an iframe. The shortcut for creating a post is Ctrl + C. That already exists and works (try it out). But not while you're focused in the iframe. The WYSIWYG is an iframe, so any shortcut we implement wont work while you're focused in it. Not without us doing some serious hacky code. The dev team discussed this today to see if we had any ideas. I'll bring it up again tomorrow to see if anyone's come up with anything (mostly for the posting shortcut). If we were to solve the shortcut problem your @ tag shortcut would be on the table for discussion at least.
