Hi wildgoosespeeder!!!
As Stinky and you yourself pointed out they weren't really used. In addition to that they really didn't serve a purpose. They are the equivalent of your appendix. A long time ago it served a purpose. But over generations and evolution it became generally useless and just kind of takes up space. So in v5 when we were designing and trying to make things more user friendly and streamlined we decided to remove it.
But wait! All is not lost. It is entirely possible to modify your template and add that back in should you wish it. Even better you could make a plugin and have a whole set of custom icons. Maybe you could even make it useful. I wish you the best of luck with this.  
Just in case it needs to be said, this feature wont be in v5.
