I can remember myself and others suggesting this before but I genuinely can't remember what you guys said. Not sure if it was/is to be a v5.x feature or if it was completely a "no" or what the heck.
I notice in "friends" you can "invite friends" via e-mail, which is fantastic.
What would be great is after you've sent that, it actually sends a link in the e-mail and it takes you to the registration page, and has an option for "invited/referred by:", and if you clicked the link it auto-fills in with the name of whoever. If someone didn't use the link but were referred by someone, give them the option on the register page to input the name.
And of course we could have all sorts of stats etc. related to this feature.

We already implemented the member side invite feature. In v5.x we will be adding an admin side invite feature. We do not currently track referrals. This is something that an admin could do on a welcome page if they wish. We added the post-registration landing page to assist in this. It is possible that at some point in the future we may track referrals. But for now we will not. That's up to the admin.

How can/does the admin track referrals?

That's up to the admin. I personally would create a custom page. Set it as my post-registration page. On that page i would have a big welcome block of text, maybe some info about the forum or what's going on. Suggestions for stuff to fill out in their profile. And in the corner if i had room I could add something like "How Did You Hear About Us?" Maybe with a drop down, the default being 'A Member of this forum referred me'. I'd include a user search box to help them specify the ember and then I'd have that form submit the data to me. I could then use it for whatever purpose I want. Maybe i have a field in everyone profile that I control and I would up their referral number. Or give the member a prize if that's what I do with referrals. But that's just me. An admin could do whatever they wanted.
