We had discussed this previously. The biggest issue with direct @ tagging is how do we tell the difference between a username and a groupname? If there were a group with the name ryan we have no way to tell if I should be tagged or the group. Currently we already have this idea in our future ideas list. We plan to use an alternate tagging method. I think currently the ideas are either an !groupname or #groupname. But we haven't finalized anything and this wont be until a later v5.x update. Thank you for the reminder though.

Even if it's # or @ or whatever symbol, because what if you have a group name that's reasonably long..

Even if it's # or @ or whatever symbol, because what if you have a group name that's reasonably long.. The symbol will be whatever we decide for consistency. And if you don't want to type a long group name then don't name your group long? I get that you're asking for a tag name, but that might get out of hand. Also just to compare, people already complained about the fact that you have to @ tag usernames. They didn't like that you couldn't tag the display name that you see. We understood this complaint, but obviously we aren't changing the username/display name structure of ProBoards. But we did listen. That being said if we are building a new tagging system that complaint is something we want to consider. People want to tag what they see. So tagging the Groups name as it appears would be best. Even if that name is long. Either way, like I said this feature is a long time away. So there's no need to discuss all the details of it now.

Ryan Roos: Alright fair enough. 1 final question though, if a name has a space in would you have to include the space in the tagging, or would it be all one word?

No idea until we do it. I would imagine you would type them without the space. Tagging with spaces doesn't work. We're going to have to look at a lot of things though if we ever implement this. Currently you can create multiple groups with the same name. That would obviously be a problem for this. So maybe it will be a tag ID. There are just too many variables and we're currently trying to get v5 ready for release so we aren't worrying about this right now.

At the risk of adding more characters, @~groupname, or something similar?
@ is already a known tagging character, while # is associated with hastags, not tagging people or groups.

As I said. Nothing finalized. Not working on it now. Lots of reworking and lots of thinking to do when we get there. If we get there.
