Separating Default Smilie Sets

I wonder if there's any information on smileys available to plugins? That would seem superfluous except it would help with trying to group them, haha. Otherwise I was thinking it'd be a matter of either using the urls (e.g. checking for what directory the smileys are in and grouping based on that) or with a manual list. I figure you guys working with plugins will know best, though, as still haven't been able to learn the ins and outs of plugins myself.
