Duplicating a board duplicates its labels

Please!

Labels have such awesome potential I think but if you want multiple boards to have identical labels it's so time consuming to set up six or so different coloured labels for lots (about 30) boards. And we probably won't just bother using them which is really frustrating.

I created all the boards from a single board by duplication assuming the labels would be duplicated as they'd part of the 'settings' bit.

It's not a bug.

At this time we won't be supporting this. Our system isn't set up to do this right now and we are focusing on launching v5.

I understand it might be an inconvenience to set up labels. But it isn't something you will be doing constantly. A secondary issue to this is that right now it is very clear that labels are separate in boards. If you create a label called Finished in one board and a label called Finished in another board they are clearly separate. They may have different colors applied to them and if one were to be deleted it wouldn't effect the other. Now your first reaction to that may be to suggest universal labels that get applied everywhere, we have considered that, but will not be doing so for part of the reason I will explain next. When you search by label in a board you only return those labels results. Our search system isn't set up to search labels across all boards. Or rather it is, but remember that just because labels have the same name doesn't mean they are the same label. Labels are unique to each board. So while it may make sense to duplicate them when you copy a board, each board is completely unique as are its labels (and moderators). I know this is a hard concept to grasp. Basically we don't want people confusing duplication (making a copy) with expansion (making another instance of the same thing). The labels are not the same label even if they were copied. And we don't want people treating them that way or thinking of them that way, because other things (like search) don't treat them that way.

At some point in the future we may rework how labels work, but for now this is how it is.

I'd suggest category based (but that may just be ideal for an RP forum.... 12 season labels for the IC categories and then location/pending/admin sort of labels for the ooc category )

And I guess I'd say searching by label and returning results from other boards is a good thing.

But I can appreciate the distinction you're making. It's just a shame they can't be 'expanded' along with the board even if it might cause some confusion.

I for one would definitely like category based labels.
They can be used for so many types of things, not just RP.

As I said, at this time this won't be happening.

When we reach v5.x updates and we reexamine labels then maybe.

If it does happen in V5.x and it is decided to go with a category/global approach to labels, and we've gone through the hours it'll take to set up all the labels individually for each board will there be a way to link them? (so all my identically coloured 'Solaria Weyr' labels will become a single label) Or will we have to delete and reapply them all?!

I don't think that we would auto link labels like that automatically. It's entirely possible that there will simply be a choice for the main admin after 5.x update.

But again this is so far from now we don't know what we'll be doing. These are all thing we will work out once we actually get there and make decisions.

Considering labels from the beta board will NOT transfer to your real forum, I'd 100% wait until you convert that board, at least.

Of course, but once we've actually converted, keep working how we do at the moment or go with making all the labels

You should not base forum decision like 'should I use labels' on our potential future upgrades. V5.x is going to be many updates over months and years. There's no guarantee that your feature request will be in v5.1. Of course it totally could be too. But we aren't even discussing those things until after launch. We plan to announce things coming in each update beforehand. But realize that it could be a while. There's no reason you should hold back on running your forum how you want because there might be an update someday. I thought I just presented a pretty neat idea with the option to combine or not. I'm not sure if that will be possible or how updates will work at all. But that again just reinforces that you should use your forum as it is and not worry about what might be.
