That post isn't visible to guests. Is a member trying to delete their own post in a non-locked thread?

Sounds like people don't know the location of the delete button. it is a menu option inside the gear icon on each post.

I think you might be right RedBassett - my members have caused my confusion.......... If only they had played with our beta forum all this confusion could have been avoided!

Greetings, Deleting one's own content is a member's choice and cannot be restricted. Mmmmm I have a group on my forum, I can stop that group deleting posts and threads...... Screen shot: http://i493./rr297/WWWF_08/Beta/ScreenShot2013-02-12at172504.png I'm not happy that they can delete threads though..... RedBassett - can you explain, re my screen shot, what changes will be made to a group by selecting the delete 'no' box?

They can Delete Threads, Posts and Shouts. That's what the Delete power under the heading Threads, Posts and Shoutbox means.

So by selecting 'yes' I can stop this group deleting threads, posts and shouts.

@ritab: Ryan Roos is referring to the power for other people's posts/threads/shouts, not your own. You would give an admin or maybe a moderator this power, so they can delete other people's content. If this option is disabled, they will only be able to delete their own content, as usual.

RedBassett: I have a 'test account' on my forum, I gave 'test account' the ability to delete and edit posts, I then switched to that account but found that I could only edit and delete 'test account' posts..... which has added to my confusion.

The test account needs to be a moderator somewhere. They're mod powers only for the location/s where the user is assigned as a moderator.

Staff is different to moderators now I think.
None of my moderators are staff.
I gave their membergroup powers and then listed the groups as moderators on the appropriate boards/categories.
Once you get your head around it the new system is really powerful and flexible.
You're seeing those options because any member/membergroup has the potential to be a moderator.

What would I do without you Maiden - the mist is clearing I now understand, but IMO it was far clearer on v4.5 when staff groups were totally separate from member groups.

Slightly incorrect. The difference isn't staff or not, it is the setting beside that: global. A global membergroup has power everywhere, a non-global one has power wherever the member is a moderator.
For example, a GMod might be global, and allowed to edit in any board, while a lower-ranked Mod might be non-global, meaning they can only moderate their boards. In this example, both can still be staff and show up in the "staff" memberlist.
You can find out more about what each of those two settings do, as well as any individual power, by hovering your mouse of the small question mark next to the setting.
