I always thought this could be a useful way to open a forum when its down for maintenance. Lets say you're working on something and you need the site closed for 3 hours and after the 3 hours it would open automatically letting in members that want to be able to post.
could this be done or should I look in Template or plugin?

You can currently place a message telling members when you forum will be out of maintenance mode. So you could say, "The forum will be back at 7:30PM PST" and you members would know when it will be back. No countdown required.
Additionally, you are either finished with what you were maintaining or you aren't. If you are finished you can click the link from anywhere on your forum to end maintenance mode. We made it simple to exit maintenance mode for this reason. If you aren't finished then you wouldn't want the forum automatically popping out of maintenance mode while you're still making changes.
We appreciate the idea but sorry we won't be adding this at this time.
Thank you.

Be aware that in v5 there is a very prominent blue bar that is at the top of every single page while you're in MM. It would be very hard to forget you were in it. and the link to exit is right there in the bar. I have no idea if this could be made to work with a plugin. You could certainly try. I can tell you for sure that even with a timer it would not display to members on the MM login page that they all see during MM. So the timer (if it worked) would be purely internal. Like RedBassett said. There isn't really a real user case where this feature would be used. You're either in MM or you aren't. You're either making changes or you aren't. Sorry.
