I have read the term Maintenance Mode, I have seen a plugin to let your members know your in maintenance. But I know nothing about maintenance? Am I supposed to be doing maintenance every so often? If so how, where, when?
TIA

Hi, thcri. Maintenance Mode is just a setting you can turn on and off on your forum to make it accessible by staff only. It's good for when you're making massive modifications to your forum that may impact user functionality, like complete layout changes.

No, not at all. But sometimes, if you want to do a lot of cleanup of old posts, or a whole revamp of the site, people put the board in maintenance mode until they're done, and then open it back up again.
** editing to add - yeah.. what Brian said, lol.

If so how, where, when? TIA This is just something if you want to fix something, or do a major update on your site, you enable this so only staff can log in, and members are blocked out till you disable it. Edit: I posted right when moonbeam did, and Brian..

Hi, Thcri. If you get around to opening a site strictly for practice and experimenting, I think you will find that putting it into Maintenance Mode is more practical. That way, no one can join or post, etc. Sure, you could go in an turn all those options off one by one, but by just picking MM, it's a closed site. Sometimes, a helper here at Proboards will ask you to take it off of MM so they can see a function in action. So remember that if you do that for a short term while you are getting help to be sure and go back in there and turn it back on.

I have my test boards in maintenance mode to prevent someone attempting to join. I have a message to go along with that letting them know that "This is a test forum so no registrations for membership are being taken."

in v5, where do we go to activate maintenance mode? I just upgraded, some things are simple and user friendly, but others I've still yet to discover.
