Please clarify the gifts icon?

Hi everybody,
can somebody clarify the usage of the gift icons members buy that sit on the profiles? What are they for apart from appreciation, what can you do with them or are they just a decoration? Some say reusable, but for what?
My members have advoided them so far, as they cost money everytime......
If somebody does buy one for you, how do you apply them? Just curious as I get asked questions, about those "silly things"

If you buy a gift for a member, a little badge will appear in their mini-profile (like the ones on my MP to the left), and a larger badge will appear on their main profile page. Some badges are regiftable, so they can be given by the receiving member to another member at a later date with no fee. Some badges also have special abilities, such as the snowballs, which can be thrown at members (and appear as another badge on their profile for a limited time) and the hot potato, which is thrown from member to member, and sometimes unlocks secret badges that will appear on members' profiles.
