If I put a smilie on photobucket and for example call the file 'cheers' and link to it as a smilie, it then acts as a censored word in that if I type 'cheers' in a post, it inserts the smilie

That's correct. You can also change the word used to place the smiley into a post via the pencil icon next to the name. I recommend surrounding the smiley name with punctuation so it doesn't interfere with regular words in posts. Examples: -cheers- *cheers* :cheers:

Oh...OK, so it's not necessary to change the url in photobucket?
I just put the link in to the photobucker image and I assume that it defaulted to the filename
