I have a bad feeling this will have to be done using a plugin, which I'd personally prefer not to. If it can be done using a header or footer code instead (if a template mod isn't possible) that would be just as great.
Currently, when you edit your signature, you can quite literally put in what appears to be an infinite number of character, as opposed to the 500 (limit). It only tells you that you have passed the limit when you hit save, by which point you can't use ctrl+z to undo your changes.
I would like either a counter just on the bottom right, below the signature (to float right of "preview"), that is real time. Or maybe even a cut off, so you literally can NOT exceed the 500 characters.

Hi Ace Of Charts, thanks for the link. I actually wasn't aware that Aaron had added a counter to that plugin. However, I only want to use a plugin as a last resort. I only want a counter and nothing else, so it's a big waste of plugin space (as in, you only get the 40 slots for free). If it can only be done via a plugin, I may consider using it, but hopefully it can be done with mods or h&f. Edit: Ok Aaron is awesome, and he has done it as a separate mod support.proboards.com/thread/455192/script-signature-character-counter
