I opted out, but I want to know what to do before the big change finally comes.
I don't mind the search engine bots crawling my site, if they aren't there no one will be able to find it. However, I mind like hell that Google has up to 5,000 bots that can crawl my board. That's just a bit excessive. On the current board I've blocked most of them, letting a few through to keep me on searches.
On the V5 I want them there at first, but as time goes on and more and more of them are crowding the place I want to block some of them. I have the IP range, can I block them within a range, or do I have to block them individually?
Also I have IPs from a Chinese spambot, I'd like that entire group - and it's a big one - blocked. Can I do that now?
Now here's where I'm having a big problem. The community that my board serves covers most of the globe and goes back to the late 1990s. There are a LOT of potential members out there. There are a lot of trolls too. I really need to separate some of them. We got burned badly on a former board because we let two people in that were not who they were pretending to be. If at that time we knew how to read IPs the problems we encountered never would have happened. By not being able to read IPs the mods and I will not be sure if the poster we're thinking of promoting is the cool guy from Taos that's a real asset, or if it's the other guy from Taos, the one that datamines restricted information and then uses it against the mods or the board itself. I really don't want to get burned again.
There are spamtrollnutjobs galore from the Ukraine, China, Russia, the UK, the US, and Australia, but there are legitimate posters too. I'd like to get control of the bad ones early on before they can cause any damage. At least 3 people in the interest group are registered sex offenders, adult men having been charged with sex with a minor. I don't want them anywhere near my board.
Help?
