Terminology?

OK. I'm just going to lay it out there... Bare it all, even if I might sound stupid.

If someone could direct me to a page with all of the basic definations of words are located, I'd very much appreciate it.

I know back in v4, if I were making a skin, there was a little cheat sheet link up top that would help me to understand what some of the items were that I was editing. SO, I pretty much know a little of the basics.

However, some of the words have changed. For instance it's easy to see that the word "skin" is now what is called "theme".... or that is a guess.

Still, I clicked on something and now my boards on the front page of one skin as well as the threads inside are all transparent. Honestly, I think it's cool. But it was not done on purpose. I know some of my members are already asking to have things put back in their original way. UGH! So I go back into that area and there are so many things that look the same, that I don't know what to unclick.

SO... What are "containers?" What are "new icon's?" and why would an icon have so many settings to possibly edit?

I'm sure as I keep poking about, I might come across new words.... some really are new and others might be changed from an old word to a new one.

If anyone could please help me figure out what I'm looking at or redirect me to someone who can. It would be so appreciates.


PS.... And here is one I've been trying to figure out for ages. What are sidebars? If I am thinking properly, they are the areas where the margins may be, but there is cool stuff we could use to put in there for our site. I uploaded one of the sidebar plugins and nothing happened.


If anybody wants to take a look in there... it's on the "Shell Cottage Skin" that I've goofed. I would not mind leaving the front page transparent but the boards once clicked... EEEK. The difference between a skin and a theme is this, or in my opinion anyway: A skin is a basic theme. So it's only colours that have been edited.
A theme is basically changing everything, and because you literally have everything at your finger tips, that's why it's now called a theme.

New Icon = you know on the thread list page (where it displays a topic title, inside a board)? When a topic is updated, on the left side it says "new". That's what that is. It's giving you the options to edit the colours of them.

Sidebars are the tables you put on the left and/or right side of your forum's main page. HAve a look in the Plugin Database, at Brian's Redux Sidebar plugin.
(be sure when you have uploaded the plugin, you click enable, and edit the settings for it. some plugins require you to edit several things + enable it before it will work).

There is no where for the terminology at the moment. The Help guide for version 5 though should be up and running for the release of v5, which should help a lot.

I could tell there was some differences with what a 'Skin' and a 'Theme' is. I could not put my finger on it or if I was even thinking correctly. Thanks.

I think I know where I went wrong with my sidebars... DUH! I uploaded the other one, but still, need to tinker around with the edits. I might try both out but only have one enabled once I find the time to set those. At least I know it will work. 

Thanks for the other information. Normally, I learn better by tinkering around. I love that. Right now, I have three sites I run. One is simple and already transfered over. The other two are keeping me busy. About the "terminology thread" I have my fingers crossed because I really look forward to a thread or something where Proboards will "Define words." I'm in a hurry to beat their deadline of April 29. I'm hoping to have one ready at least.  The other one I have until the end of the year if I don't make it. Thanks again.

Just to weigh in on this. Once we get the Help Guide up and running we will be adding a glossary. You will be able to search and look up terms with full explanations. However we're still in beta and still haven't launched the v5 software, so you've got to wait a little while before that happens.

Ok.... sounds good to hear that this will be something to look forward to eventually. So, once you launch the new software... would this be the end of April date or the end of 2013 date?

The software officially launches on April 29th.
