I just set my board to private so that only members and admin can see the content. The problem is, when new users visit the page, all they see are two banner ads stacked on top of each other. If I leave the statistics on, they will see that there is no content yet, so I have taken that off for now. Having a legend displayed on a board that has no publicly displayed content makes no sense, and there is nothing explaining that the board is private, but that users must first register in order to view the forum messages. In addition, having two identical banners floating on top of each other with no content looks like spam.
It seems that when a board is set to private and an unregistered user visits the page, they should see a splash page that explains the board is private and they need to register in order to view the content. The owner should have the ability to create a custom homepage message, or have the ability to modify a standard homepage pitching users to register on the private forum. Otherwise, what would compel anyone to register on an empty page?

Greetings,
It sounds like you made all categories hide from guests, but not the whole forum.
You can turn on the "guests must login" feature in your registration settings to fix this issue.

Greetings, It sounds like you made all categories hide from guests, but not the whole forum. You can turn on the "guests must login" feature in your registration settings to fix this issue. Ahh I edited the root category properties and selected "Members and Staff" can access this category. Perhaps the "Guests Must Login" feature might also be placed on this root menu. Is there a way to modify the login required page? Thanks! Jonathan

Guests Must Login is separate because it affects the entire forum, not just the category. If you set the category to not display to guests, other things like member's profiles, side tables, additional content, etc will still show to guests. With GML turned on, guests simply see a login page instead of any forum content.
As for the login page, this cannot be modified for security reasons, however you can change its colours when editing themes on your forum.
