Unfortunately that still doesn't help anyone. Colours would play a big part of it, so not know that would be a huge dilemma. Though, if you could provide the following 3 colours, that could certainly help: text, links, and window background.
The reason those colours would help is because..
Text - could be used for the "off/old" colour.
Links - could be used for the "on/new" colour.
Window Background - to see what other effects may need to be added (shadows, for a quick example) so it stands out and fits in nicely, and can be seen.
Edit:
Just noticed you said thread icons. Either way those 3 colours would be great.
