These new methods are intended to alleviate race conditions and the like. Documentation will be released when they are (we haven't even started coding them yet).

Okay, some further updates on this front: I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but the talk of sharing a single key to store non-related data is causing Pat to look more critically at allowing this type of key. There's no official rule about this yet, but it seems like the line is going to come down roughly to be that you can share a key if the data stored within is all related, but storing non-related data in the same key is bad. Purely from a business perspective, providing a way to circumvent the super key restrictions doesn't make sense, so if we provide this type of key, it's likely to come with a restriction to prevent exactly that. On the more positive side, we've decided to implement the following additions to key setting functionality: - Append
- Increment
- Decrement
- Push
- Pop
Increment and Decrement will obviously only work correctly on integers, and Push and Pop will only work correctly on arrays. were these ever included in a push and I just didnt see it?

Not yet, it's what I'm currently working on implementing. Hi Tim Camara, Are these now implemented? I'm just starting working on something with the new 'global' key and was wondering if these are now available to use? Cheers, Pebble.

what was decided about the use of the global key then? is there indeed only one global key that cant be shared? or can every plugin access it own global key?

Go check out your admin area to find out. (hint: yes, it's available) Sorry Tim, I wasn't clear. I'm using the global key I was asking if these had been implemented: •Append •Increment •Decrement •Push •Pop I've just tried using push but it failed, so I guess it's not done yet, or I did it wrong!

Sorry, I saw your post, glanced at the thread title, and responded without thinking any further. We've been keeping those functions under wraps since the documentation for them isn't quite finished yet. Hopefully it'll be done in the next day or two (mostly depending on what other priority bugs come up in that time).

Huh, somehow I didn't see your post there, Wormopolis. Forum super keys follow the same rules as other plugin keys, e.g., plugin keys may only share data between plugins if the plugins are related in purpose. For example, your Alters plugin and your Alters Extension plugins would be considered related. If there's any concern, you can of course post in the plugin board for guidance. Basically, no using a single general-purpose storage key that's used by 6 different plugins to store whatever they happen to need. Other than that, you're free to use as many or as few super forum keys as you like. For future reference: www.proboards.com/developer-guidelines.

I think the confusion was in the "only one" wording used earlier in the thread. a forum can have multiple forum keys then?

I think the confusion was in the "only one" wording used earlier in the thread. a forum can have multiple forum keys then? The way it's worded in the admin panel is that the global key is a super key and a forum can have two super keys (presumably of either sort)

well unless they pay for more. they just START with 2 super keys. I was saying that earlier in the thread the wording made it sound like there was only one global forum key. which is where the concept of sharing started. but if we can have more then one global forum key (whether in a single plugin or from multiple plugins) then nevermind all the questions. which also means I wont have to ro-sham-bo you.

Thank the lord for that. I wasn't looking forward to a ro-sham-boing (mainly because I didn't know exactly what it involved and the mind was working overtime and each scenario was getting worse!). I can now sleep easy tonight.
