Mention System

I was wondering if someone could create a mention system so that when you type @(username) on a reply, the persion mentioned would recieve a notification telling them that they have been mentioned by someone on a thread.

You already kind of get that in the menu bar. A bubble appears top right of the 'Profile' link.

I'm afraid there's not much more that can be done, other than maybe a pop-up alerting you to the fact that additions have been added to your profile, but you'd still need to visit your profile page to find out what.

But say you wanted to mention someone in a post without quoting them, they may not be directed to the thread.

You have to use the member's username, not their display name. You can auto-insert the tag by ALT-clicking a members name

Is it possible to change my actual username then? Or I would I have to register the account Lew and give it the permissions?

no. correct, you have to register a new account.

Remember that display names can be changed, so lew would only work until the user changed their display name.

Usernames are static, display names are variable. You can find a user's username on their profile, by hovering your cursor over their name, or by ALT-clicking their name.

It doesn't work when you use someones display name, only their username?

Correct. If you ALT-click my name, it will tag me with my username.

if you are in the normal post editor and click the button with the "@" on it, it will open a search server. you can search by username OR display name in that

Just for reference, for some reason I have to hold CTRL+ALT and click a name to get it to add the username to the text field, if I just use CTRL it tries to download the link...

I thought they had just ALT-click working globally

Yeah.. It took me ages to find out I need CTRL as well.
