Default guest avatar with a custom template help

I have a custom template for my mini profiles and I would like to add the Default Guest Avatar option but as I'm going over the instructions I'm sure they are easy to follow but since my template isn't the default I feel I'm lost on where to put the two parts I need to to get my desired outcome. Help?

Find this:

And replace it with this.

{if !$[user.is_member]}
    <div class="avatar"><img src="AVATAR-URL" alt="$[user.name]'s Avatar" /></div>
{elseif $[user.avatar]}
    <div class="avatar">$[user.avatar]</div>
