Hi Cassie,
In the theme manager go to theme settings and tell it to either "Display Logo" or "Do not display a title" if you don't have a logo.
But it should be noted that you can have both a "logo" and a "banner" they are separate things. In this way you can have a picture (banner) behind your title graphic (Logo) and if the board is not a fixed width they will contract and expand but the logo will never be cropped by the varying sizes. I've done that on several of my themes.
It can also allow you some creativity like using the random banner plugin to switch the picture each time the page is loaded but leave the logo alone.
