For example, if I have several images/awards saved in the Awards System plugin and then a new version is released, first off: how do I update to the new version? Do I click "Install on Forum" again? And secondly, once updated, will it remove the images/awards I had saved on the previous version of the plugin?
Note that the Awards System is just an example. Several of my plugins are outdated and face this problem/question as well.

one of the recent updates was supposed to allow plugin settings to transfer when you updated a plugin. I dont know if that has gone live yet though. several other features have gone live, but maybe Tim Camara can say if that has or not

I tested with the Easy Affiliates plugin by deleting the current plugin but not deleting the data of it and then installing the new version of the Easy Affiliate plugin and the data was not transferred, if that information helps at all?

well if you delete the plugin, then the data will go with it. you would need to install the new version while the old was still in there I believe

Ahh, that makes more sense. Would I then delete the old version or simply unenable it?

Im not entirely sure what happens. I havent tried updating any plugins since I only seem to be updating my own. since you can now install older versions, try installing an old version of something, fill in some crap data for testing, then install a new version to see what it does.

With the awards plugin the best thing you can do is save both your images and descriptions in a text file before you update. Then it will be simple to paste them back in to the new version. Also, since it uses a key to track who had what, as long as you only delete the plugin and not the key, the awards you've already given will still be there.
I've done this a couple of times

Assuming that the update is live, you don't need to do anything before importing the new version. The transfer works whether the old version is enabled or disabled. Just don't delete the old one before you import the new one, or there won't be anything left to transfer.
