Display name change needs administrative approval

I wasn't sure if this would be a modification of Prevent Display Name Change by ®i©hie or its own plugin, so I made a new thread rather than posting in that Support thread.

I would like something similar to the Prevent Display Name Change but different--you can change your display name, but it won't be processed/go through/show up until an administrator approves the name change (those allowed to approve would be listed in the user interface). Once approved, the name change shows up. If rejected, the name doesn't change.

The main problems I see with this is how to notify the administrator/approvers that a new name needs to be changed. I was thinking perhaps a PM gets sent with the clickable links/buttons Approve and Reject in it? If Rejected, the user who was trying to change their name gets a PM back saying it was rejected. If approved, it just goes through.

Would this be possible, Richie or someone else?

There is a plugin "display name change earned" that I have yet to make a mod to for editing reward numbers. you could essentially set it up so they dont earn new points, but you can edit the points on their profile so they are allowed a one time change.

however, in order to make this mod, I am waiting on a code push from Tim to allow data append on keys. otherwise setting data on a key would overwrite it.

jrryan, that's pretty much how we're doing it right now. We have Prevent Display Name enabled and there is a note in the Edit Profile area that you have to request your name be changed in a designated board. However, having been an admin for a while now, I know members don't tend to think "Oh, this is why that rule is in place, because of this logical reasoning" they just get mad at lack of ease for themselves. Members don't tend to think on the administrative side of forums, only their personal experience. I've had a lot of problems with that thought process, honestly. So I know at least one, though likely more than one, member will complain about their complete inability to even change their display name, whereas the approve/reject system would make them feel at least a bit more in control about it. I remember how many people complained when the had to post two words in a board to let us know they needed something done somewhere by a staff member -eyeroll- because if they are too lazy to post two words, then the staff have to search the 50+ boards every few hours a day.

Anyway, I digress. xD But yes, that was the original reasoning for the request, but your idea is what we're currently utilizing and will continue to until or if there is ever another option. ^^
