URL Shortening Question

I have a question about url shortening. I've designed a board layout for my forum, and the last post section is a little rectangle with the words inside it. But if I have a section that says, for example: "LAST POST BY DISPLAY NAME IN LONG THREAD TITLE LINK HERE", is it possible to shorten it somehow to something like: "LAST POST BY DISPLAY NAME IN LONG THREAD..." Because some threads are double-lining on me and forcing the other boards out of position, so any help, whether a 'yes it's possible' or a 'no it's not possible' would be appreciated!
