How do I make a banner that spans the full width or the page

this might sound confusing but ok, first of all I am using v5 so this is new to me, but see how the banner at the top of this page goes all the way across, I'm assuming that the sides of it are part of the background but I want a banner that goes all the way across like that and I would like to know how to do that if anyone knows. 

I also have another question. How do I align the navigation bar differently? I want mine to the left, and I tried using the thing under navigation bar in the visual editor but it didn't do anything. Sorry if I sound stupid this is new to me :/

You'll first need a repeating background, then as long as you set that image as your "background image" of your forum banner (using the Visual Editor) you can make the banner fluid/100% by doing this trick:

If you know how to mess with layout templates, a quick way would be to just move this part of your Forum Wrapper template:

And paste it directly below the $[participated_threads_link]

The navigation bar is also by default to the left, did you mean you want it to the right?
