If you haven't figured this out yet, for the logo (not banner) you can go to: Admin> Themes> Theme Settings. If you hover over the theme you'll see a button that says images. Click on it and you should see the place to upload the logo.
I'm not sure if that is what you meant about correct place. And just in case the confusion is whether it is a logo or banner that you want, using this site as an example, the Proboards Support text is the logo. The background behind it is Proboards banner. If you have a full sized banner then you'd want to add that:
Admin> Themes> Advanced Styles & CSS> Visual Editor and then Header (Top) and you'll see the place for the banner. Keep in mind your logo (name of your site) will still be there if you haven't disabled it. To disable you need to do so in the themes under the settings tab.
