Hello!
I run a forum that deals with translations into foreign languages, languages that require special characters that don't come on a qwerty keyboard. We only need a small set of the special characters:
Á á É é Í í Ó ó Ú ú Ý ý  â Ê ê Î î Ô ô Û û ? ? Æ æ Ë ë Œ œ Ð ð Þ þ Ñ ñ
So, in the same place that you can change the font or make text bold, a drop-down menu that would insert special characters would be really helpful for my forum's users.
Thank you for your consideration,
dreamingfifi of realelvish.net

I want to say that the code Chris wrote for adding things to the editor toolbar could pull this off? maybe?

Unfortunately the BBCode buttons plugin is geared toward adding attributes not content, this would be best done with a dedicated code. I'll see if I can whip up something over the weekend if the request is not yet filled. I am however curious whether these characters would not be more quickly created by typing their alt codes?

Hey,
Something I was thinking (Don't kill me, coding peoples!), perhaps it would be easier for you to use the censored words function of Proboards? Set it to replace something that otherwise wouldn't come up in text with one of your alt codes, and then everyone would know that, to get this letter, type this into the body of your message? (As long as you don't select 'exact word')
For example, take this character: œ You could set 'oe' (with the ' marks) as the censored word, and then set the replacement to be œ, so that if I were to type (sorry, don't know any actual words, so I'm making this up to demonstrate) dr'oe'k, it would replace the middle, and make the text read drœk?

Stern that's a magnificent idea! realelvish here's the code you requested, I created it (despite Stern 's wonderful suggestion) for those of us who have trouble remembering alt codes or what represents with what in replacement strings. It is based on the character map that ships with windows but allows definable characters and character ranges to avoid searching through hundreds of characters just to type one single glyph. DISCLAIMER: tested for compatibility in Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer but undiscovered bugs may still exist

If you are adding it but it is somehow not saving then that might be a horse of a different color. Keep in mind that there are almost 1 million characters in unicode which is why you add the ones you want to use for your forum according to the instructions given.

Unless you are spoofing the user-agent, you appear to be using the latest chrome version (v53.0.2785) on windows 10 the same as I am so surprising that you cannot see 90% of the emojis in my last post while I am seeing all of them using the same setup. If I view using Firefox however the majority of them are not viewable Firefox:
Chrome:
Samsung Galaxy:
Amazon Fire:
If I specify a font that ships with windows 8 and up that has the emojis then Firefox suddenly sees the light. My understanding is that windows 10 has a mechanism that allows the correct font to be used but certain apps such as Firefox do not take advantage of this. Chrome which just added support for the unicode emojis in version 52 got it right. Are you able to see them with a particular font specified?
