Popup Window

Hi guys ~

This started yesterday on our board. A popup appears after replying to a post that says "There's a Problem. The current thread numbers do not match. Please click 'OK' to reset them. Thank you."


And sometimes, the popup appears without a message, just the title "There's a Problem" ~




I've not added any new feature, (well, I did add another plugin earlier today), but the problem started before that.


Any ideas?

Does it happen in every thread? Or just specific threads?

Also in the blank pop-up, if you highlighted the blank area does text appear? Just want to make sure there isn't white text on a white background that's causing it to appear invisible

It's blank. To be sure, I just zoomed in on the picture and there's nothing there. I don't have a light color type style on that theme.


A member just stated it's only happening for him when he creates a thread. And I realized he's correct. That's when it happens for me, too.

Does it seem to happen in just one board on the forum? Or has it happened in all areas? Also, how frequent do you receive the error? Every time you create a new thread? Or does it come up occasionally?

Lol, first I have to apologize. On my Daisy theme, I just realized I do have a light hex color for the default. So my reply has changed accordingly. Yes, Ricky, it is possible that my blank message DOES have a message! 

It's throughout the forum. It happened to me on another board, but most of my members use the Discussion Board. so they will notice it most there.

Once you click "ok" on that popup everything goes through without a hitch. This last time, I dismissed it without clicking "ok" and it went through as well.

I created several new threads (deleted each of them after creating) in the discussion board area of the forum, but didn't receive the error at all after creating each of the threads. Do you have any idea at all about how frequent it comes up? (ie. once every 10 new threads, something along those lines)

Ricky, you can check it out here for yourself. I created one thread today and it popped up. Another member created three and it popped up three times. In fact, he's the member who started the thread about it. I haven't been on our board much after I added the new plugin in the early morning hours.  When I came to the board this afternoon and started a thread, it happened.  I first noticed it around this time yesterday.

I was able to get consistent instances of this popup occurring each time I tried to create a new thread. I'm speaking to our sysadmin now about the cause.

Did some tests and found that with plugins disabled the popup never appears. The most likely cause is a plugin thats timing out and causing the script killer to kick in and even though the post says "I'm done!" that message isn't received (which kicks in the error).

I'll try to narrow things down further.

Alright I was able to find the cause to be the ColorSmear plugin (or so it appears). I also noticed some exaggerated slow loading that was pulling from a dropbox address (in case you also wanted to address that, not sure what plugin/theme what have you is using that).

I left that plugin disabled, please let me know if the error still occurs for you and your users.

Oh, no. I've had color smear on nearly from the beginning of v5. It's never caused this to happen before.


As far as dropbox, I don't use it. I know many of the plug-in authors do ~ but I don't link directly to that. I download the plugin to my computer and put it on my forum from there. Any ideas how to narrow this one down?

And as I said, no new plugins were added, when the problem first appeared.

But I'll keep color smeared disabled for a bit.

Sadly, (or happily) it's not color smear. It's off and I just tried starting a thread and the popup appeared. This time, I highlighted the "empty" box.

I did a quick search and found that the error was also described here in the Recent Threads Plugin thread, so that might actually be the cause (would make sense too since that actually deals with threads, where as the colorsmear plugin should just be focused on users). Can you try temporarily disabling that plugin instead and see if that works?

Ah, that makes more sense. That is a new plugin just added a week or so ago. And I really like it. I added it to Brian's sidebar.

But I do think that's more likely the case. I was 50/50 for starting threads with Color Smear off. I got the popup on 2 new threads and didn't get it on the other two. 

Let me do a test with that one disabled. I'll get back to you.
