Ok, been thinking up strategies to entice visitors to join the forum.
Conventional wisdom would suggest that it is "best" to allow guests to at least be able to browse your forum at a thread level so they can see the value in joining.
Fair enough, but, not unreasonably, I'd suggest, and looking at Guest IPs, there are fair few "lurkers" that get in presumably sucking information- which they can do without joining if I set the relevant boards permissions as follows:
View - Everyone
Access - Everyone
Create Threads - Members and Staff
Update Threads - Members and Staff
Create Polls - Staff or Members and Staff
Now, to prevent the lurkers (and hopefully encourage guests to join) I could change relevant boards permissions to as follows:
View - Everyone
Access - Members and Staff
Create Threads - Members and Staff
Update Threads - Members and Staff
Create Polls - Staff or Members and Staff
BUT, the disadvantage of this is when you view the main forum page, the relevant boards that you have set like this have the last field as blank - which, if you set this permission level across a lot of your boards or categories is not very member enticing.
So!
What I WOULD like to be able to do is:
1) Display the last post in each board.
2) Give guests the right to access (list) but not update threads in in each board.
This would provide the best of both worlds - full forum visibility (except those parts of the forum I hide from guests etc) but lurkers would no longer be able to suck info - they could view the thread in the board list - but not access that thread.
The only way I can think of doing this is by being able to set permissions at a thread level.
EDIT - Or somehow changing how the display of board contents works - when access is set to Members and Staff.
Is that possible please?
