User edited mini profile display name color.

Hello everyone.  The titles a mouthful, but I was told I'd need a plugin to do this, so here I'm asking.  I have enabled users to change their mini profile background, but if the background is a dark color, the black text on top of it obviously doesn't show up well.  So, in short, I'd like to make an option for users to change the color of their display names.  Maybe restrict members to a selection of colors so it doesn't get too whacky....thoughts?

I would suggest seeing if Bob could add that into the plugin he already created for doing MP backgrounds:

Yes, just the mini profiles. And I would, but it appears he doesn't check that thread anymore as multiple people have pointed out a bug even tagging him with no reply.

It requires adding 3 custom profile fields to the members tab in admin panel



They need to be named EXACTLY the same as the ones in the image.  The background one can be type "anything", and the color ones should be type "alphanumeric"

once the custom profile fields are setup, go to edit your profile.  on the personal tab, you will see a new section for MPBG.  it will have the 3 fields on the left, and a mockup mini-profile on the right.  as you make changes to things, it will make live changes to the MP so you can see what it will look like.  the background field, when clicked, will bring up a dialog where you can choose an image or a color (or both if you want).  clicking color fields will bring up the PB color picker.  when you are satisfied with what you have, save your profile.  it should be active on all threads, conversations, and recent posts screens.  pagination works, and deleting a post wont break it.  it will hide those 3 fields from showing in the mini profile on display.

the mini-profile in the editor is a mockup one with data I pulled from pb.data, so it wont have all the same stuff your normal MP will have.  its just for reference anyways.

staff can change someones values, but the mp they see will look like their own (because as I said I pulled from pb.data)

I. Love it. Thanks, Wormopolis! Two things I think could be added: Ability to make display name bold, and a way to limit members to certain colors.

bold would be easier to do by just adding some CSS into the style sheet and making all of the names bold. that way there is a bit more uniformity and it doesnt require having to store and extract the option.

restricting colors I dont think I can do. there wouldnt be a way to tell from a background image that it was mostly red so dont allow name or text to be red. if you try and restrict from using black, then if they use a almost white background they would need black and vice verse. staff has the ability to go in and manually change something if they want.

I started it but didnt finish the ability to exclude members from being able to utilize the features.

Hmm. I'm not sure we are on the same page with the limiting colors. I meant to have a selection of colors, that would work with pretty much all backgrounds, but still retain the semi uniformity of the forum color scheme. That's what I was trying to say.

Anyways, yes, a way to have only certain groups able to access these abilities would be nice.

Im not going to be able to do a color selection based on theme thing. It opens the entire color pallette though, and staff who can edit profiles can always change it if they want. if a member insists on doing something "clever" like having a black background with black text, you can easily remove the feature for them by making them an excluded member

Wormopolis, I'm having a little problem. It seems to be only my mini profile but there is a huge space between my Post count and "Member is online" Can I put that back to normal?
