notification of new replies to participated button

I would like a plugin that adds a notification  (like you get with messages or profile) to the participated tab in the header. Simply would show 1 if one thread you participate in has a new reply,2 for two threads and so on.

The Participated button already shows a "new" icon next to it if there's updated threads within it, but there's no way to make it show a number instead as there's nothing on the forum that's keeping count of it.

I'M sorry, I was not specific.  I want to hide the nav tree (and the participated button in it) and rely only on the participated button in the nav bar (just below the banner, with the home,members,admin tabs etc.).

You wouldn't need a plugin for that. Just remove them from Themes > Layout Templates > Forum Wrapper on each of your themes by removing the following code in that template:

$[participated_threads_link]

<div id="navigation-tree">
    $[navigation.tree]
</div>
