General Notices allows you to enter events into the Dates tab with their associated events. The text field is used to describe the event, or what the event was, or whatever. Some may even find it useful to enter in upcoming events for their forum where it will automatically list it on that date.

Companion Info

- This is exactly like General Notices, except that it will basically allow 2 copies to run. This is useful if you want to run a 2nd one for Staff only.
- Use: <div class="msg-gn1"></div> (placed where you want it to display.

Example (using Home template for both) to show the Companion for Staff only and the original for everyone:

You can use any template for either. The above is just an example if you want them to both be in the same template and the Companion is for Staff Only notices.

NOTE: The Companion will not be updated. I plan on adding a few more options to the actual General Notices plugin that will allow an option as to whether an event is for Staff Only, Members Only or Everyone (to includes guests being able to view). The Companion can be used until these modifications are done (no ETA for completion yet.)

- Added in an option to use Container or HTML. Setting this to Container (also is the default) will have it look as it has in previous versions. Setting to HTML will take just the HTML inside the Event Description box and display that. The HTML setting adds no outside formatting (no container or other outside formatting) and will only use the formatting within the Event Description box itself. It can still be targeted with its class for additional formatting on your end. I'd like to thank @khristian for the request.

Please note that the container height sizes automatically, but you can change this via CSS. Also note that dates MUST be entered in the format of MM/DD, where MM = Month and DD = Date. Do not use 2 digits for single digit months or dates. Do not include the year - use your Description field to include that.

TO USE:

(1) Install the plugin
(2) Enter your events in the Dates tab
(3) Optionally set your preferred settings in the Settings tab
(4) Optionally edit class(es) the plugin should use in the Advanced tab
(5) Make sure the plugin is enabled
(6) All that's left is to put: <div class="msg-gn"></div> where you want the plugin to display.


If there are any bugs / suggestions for this plugin, please post them here and not in the Review area in the library. I don't check those that often and I may not see it in a timely manner.

Update:

I didn't realize it before submitting it, but on the Settings tab > Title Bar Display option, it still says "This option will let you choose either On This Date or On This Day as the title in the Title Bar." - even though neither of those are choices there. Ooops.

This has been fixed, but waiting to hear if there are any bugs I should know about before submitting that small fix.

- NOTE: This plugin is a variation of the On This Date (OTD) plugin. Most of the settings are the same as OTD's, so if you're familiar with OTD, you should have no problems with General Notices.
- Title Bar titles are different. You can even specify a custom title for the Title Bar. Please note that a custom title will only show if the option above is set to (Use Custom title). You do not need to clear this field if changing to a "pre-made" title. The custom title will be ignored in this case.
- Custom Titles and Date Placement in Title Bar: If using a custom title, you will need to add the necessary space(s) at the end of your custom title to separate it from the date there. In the image, my Custom Title is actually set to (quotes used to show spacing): "NEW - Custom Titles can be set - " (note the space after the hyphen). If you do not do this with a date in the title bar, your custom title and the date will run into each other.

A few things. 1. When putting the date in the content, I would think that it would add the date once and then it would be done.
However for each event it adds the date over again.
2. When having multiple dates, there is no line break added. So it becomes a run-on sentence. I would like a <br> automatically between events especially when there is no date to distinguish its a new event. Preferably BEFORE the date gets appended a second time if issue one is not concerning.
3. An option to place automatically in the header, footer, or none would be helpful for coder noobs.

(1) The multiple dates in Content (same as OTD) were meant as separators between content items if more than one content for that date.
(2) There used to be, but I've had complaints about the hard-coded breaks I had in there. This is why I had removed all hard-coded breaks in OTD and did not put them in GN. Since Event Description boxes are now HTML, people can add in a <br /> or not on their preference.
(3) I'll see what I can do to get some auto-placement choices made.

#3 would be most helpful especially for those who are even more of a novice at this stuff than I am.

Hey thanks for bringing that to my attention. When I went to set that feature to show "no events for that date" I found and LOVE the option where we could put a custom message to show instead of that. So cool.

For those who might be interested, I've done up a 2nd copy of General Notices with variable name changes. In essence, it allows a 2nd copy to run with the original copy without interfering. This was done as a request, as someone wanted to be able to run 2 copies - one for just Staff and the other for either just Members or everyone. It has not been submitted to the library, as I'm not sure it qualifies to be considered as a new plugin. As an example, where 1 is for Staff only and the other is for everyone, this could be a possible setup in a template:

As the original uses .msg-gn, I showed that for everyone, as it's probably already set up for that on a forum owner's forum. The companion uses .msg-gn1, and with the code above, would only show events / notices to just Members who are part of a Staff group. Events in one do NOT carry over into the other - they are completely separate entities, as far as the plugins are concerned.

If enough people want this, I'll post a download link in the OP. The Companion's configuration is the same as the regular General Notices plugin. The only difference is 1 additional preset title bar title option of: Staff Alert. Other than that, it works the exact same way as General Notices.

Please note: The Companion will not be submitted to the library. When I'm able to complete the update to the actual General Notices plugin, the Companion will most likely become obsolete.

Lynx I just wanted to let you know that I finally have gotten the time to get more things done to the site. I just now did get the companion up and filled in. Thanks for the heads up about the Companion will not be submitted to the library. I'll keep an eye out for the General Notices plugin whenever you get to update it. No hurries though.

ps- really, I could not think of what I would use the companion for. You mentioned it's good for messages just for other admin's to view right away. I do see that would be very useful for busier sites. Mine's too small and I only have the one admin other than myself. SO.. I thought it would be perfect to actually use it for birthdays for members as well as the characters we read about in the books. There's a lot. Thanks.

One quick question, I know you made the "On this date" plugin, but I seem to be using the General notices plugin for the same thing. Is this a good idea or is there something I should know about like..... will there not be enough space allotted for all of the content info for the whole years worth of notes? Should I really be using the On this date plugin for that stuff?
