Custom input next to thread title/subject line

Hello! I hope the title is appropriate, haha, wasn't sure how to word it... but I will go into more detail on what I mean below!

The basic idea of what we'd like is something that serves exactly like the thread title, or subject line (placement of it, form, ect) that will hold coordinates (typed in) chosen from our In Character map just before it. This would be just for our In Character boards. So you'll have the coordinates of the thread, next to the thread title.

I'm bad at describing this, so hopefully this image I made (using firebug to place the coordinates) will convey what I mean:



So the coordinate input will have that different styling, (maybe within { } ) next to the thread title.

SPECIFICS: How the coordinates work on our map is that there could be a maximum of 3 characters on the left side of the period, (I say characters instead of numbers because if the coordinates are secret, members are allowed to put .?) and then on the right side of the period, it will always be 1-6.

Like the subject line, this will be mandatory in order to post. However, again, we only want this on the selected boards, the ones our members will be roleplaying in.

Final specific is the styling: If it is possible to style with CSS or something, so that it stands out from the thread title itself.

And... that about covers it! Thank you in advance for anyone who would be willing to take a look at this for us. The team and I at RISK have been fumbling for solutions to this for awhile now and would greatly appreciate any help sent our way or alternative ways to achieve the concept that we want. It pretty much adds a section underneath that you can put whatever you want in it on any given thread.

The thread description plugin we have considered for this, as it is very close to what we're looking for and would fulfill one of our needs.

But what we really want is something that shows up in the exact same places as the thread title does. It's important to the roleplay - because the coordinates tell you exactly where a character is - that they can be seen easily without the risk of being missed or overlooked. For us, it's important it stands out from the title as a separate element.

I hope that makes sense without the context of the actual site. Because the thread description plugin is close to what we want, we did try and contact the maker of it but they haven't responded so we expected they were busy, which is understandable.

We're just hoping to get something closer to that, but we appreciate the suggestion!

I still think this could be done with the thread description, but with modified CSS to move it and style it. Let me look at it.

Okay so this won't move it to appear first. It will still appear below it but this will style the color so it stands out more.  While using the thread description plugin, go to your Admin > Themes > Advanced Styles & CSS > stylesheet and put this at the bottom of the stylesheet:

.thread_description_list
{color:white!important}


replace white with whatever color you want. If you want it to be a specific color just use the # before the color number like so:

.thread_description_list
{color:#ffffff!important}


I'm still looking into it to move it using that plugin, but here's at least a styling solution.

I know you might still want a plugin specifically built for this, and that's okay, but I thought this might be a bandaid until you can get that.

The other option is proboards labels, and adjusting the thread layout template to have the labels before not after

The issue I would see with labels, is that a new label would have to be made by Staff for every new "coordinate" that the OP is talking about. If that coordinate changes on every new thread, that would mean a LOT of new labels.

Sorry for the slow reply, and thanks again for your replies!

Because we already use the thread description plugin for our OOC boards, I would think it's not appropriate for our use because the main function we want out of it is the movement, and to show up alongside wherever the thread title shows. If that plugin could be adapted towards that, though, I think I could see it working.

Even though we would still like a plugin, or something closer to that, we'll hopefully be able to utilize the styling for the meantime. Thank you!

And HA yes, unfortunately we have many "coordinates". It can be anything from 365.2 to 686.1 on each thread. Which sounds more complicated than it is in practice, but is why it's important that they be seen easily from the same angles as the thread title - a map is already visible on each board in this process, just needs the thread itself to correlate with the In Character location.

We figured the easiest way to achieve that is a manual input, it's just getting them to that place.

I hope that doesn't complicate my explanation, just hoping to give more context in case there are any other ideas, though a plugin is still desired overall.

I hate to be a pain in bumping this old thing, but as it's still very much a desired feature on our RPG, I wanted to check again if there was anyone who could do this for us or any ideas on an equivalent function.

I haven't seen it mentioned but wouldn't the Thread Meta Data fit the bill, aside form the mandatory field requirement which I don't recall it having it pretty much sounds like what is being described

I was really hopeful when I saw that plugin, as it did seem like it would do the job with a little tweaking. Sadly that was either beyond my skill or it wasn't quite right for what we're looking for. It is a really cool plugin though that I'd love to use on our site for other stuff!

For what we're looking for, the coordinates need to show up wherever the thread title shows up. So when you're on the homepage and can see the most recent threads in the boards, you can see the coordinates (ex. "xxx.x | Thread title", and then in the thread list (which the thread meta data did provide but not the others) and then finally when you click on the thread itself. Essentially, wherever you can see the thread title, you see the coordinates, is what we'd like.

Sorry for the hassle, we really appreciate all the suggestions!

Ah now I get you east , I think there might be a way to coerce the Thread Meta Data to display the data the way you wish (similar to this) without having to resort to creating a plugin from scratch. Let me load it on a forum and take a look

Try this plugin out: Thread Meta Data Mitigator (for use with Thread Meta Data Plugin)

The plugin was originally a script but I decided to make it a plugin to make it a bit easier to configure but as it stands you still need some knowledge of CSS and HTML to get it working. It can be simplified to a much greater degree but at the cost of power and flexibility and I intend to find that sweet spot pending V6 revelations. For now I've preconfigured it to do what I think is what you are asking but I preconfigured it for a data field id of "meta1" so obviously you would replace the "meta1" preconfigured in this plugin's setting with the actual id you created in the other plugin. There are three places where "meta1" appears (see first two screenshot image below --highlighted text in meta ID column and 2 in CSS column)
