can somebody tell me what the use of this is? a lot of forums do it, proboards, jcink etc and i do not get it i mean... i get it but at same time i do not because it is not like posting a thread to advertise your forum on another is getting you that much more members
on most forums them threads in those sections do not even get a lot of views let alone the fact you cannot even bump like you can here for example if you cannot bump it , you most likely won't get that much views
so what is the whole point and why do so many do it? why is it a big thing on proboards forums?

its simply for organization purposes. If there is a post in a first post board, the admins of the site know that they can post their ad on the site that advertised.
A post in the link back board means that they've already advertised on that site and the deed is being returned. This way they know they don't need to post their ad on that specific site.
This cuts down on ads being posted repeatedly from the same people.

In addition to what Star's Legacy said, having your link on other boards give the search engine bots more to look at. Basically between the number of times your URL is listed on the internet and the amount of content you give bots to index, your site will be more easily picked up by the search engines.

i wasn't talking about that, because what you are saying , i knew that already i was talking about the whole concept of it, people advertising their own forum on other forums like that where you post it, thread only gets a couple views and it vanishes soon enough because of new threads but like others have said, i know its because to get your name out there i just was wondering why its such a big thing on proboards really i mean this kind of thing you never see on forums made with paid software like ipb etc

I don't have much experience with the paid forum software, Pebbles, but I would think they have other ways for admins to get word out about their forums. Perhaps the idea of forum advert for forum advert evolved as a way for forums on free platforms to spread the word apart from word of mouth. Or, I supposed, it could have come from a want of more control on the admin part. I'm really not sure because I don't know where this kind of advertising started let alone how. I only know that I've seen it even on premium boards hosted by Jcink. Could have been a combination of reasons too.

PebblesFrom what I have seen this is really only a big thing on role playing forums. I see it on Proboards, Jcink/invisionfree, zetaboards, mybb, webs and forumotion. So it's not just a Proboards thing it's more of a role-playing thing in general so forums can be found and seen by others to potentially gain more members.
