REQUEST FOR A PLUGIN
This is a request for "a plugin, using a thread key, to give titles more space."
The purpose of the plugin would be to increase the available length of titles to an arbitrary number up to 500 characters.
Originally I thought I would request an increase to up to 300, which is Reddit's limit, but I would like to one-up Reddit in case someone feels a need to do so, so the request is to make it work up to 500, as set in the plugin.
YES, THIS IS POSSIBLE
Note:
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
I will very greatly appreciate this work! I love proboards and its customizability in every way and this is the one thing keeping me from submitting reference articles to my forum with the title that I choose, widely linked from all over the web and including extremely good SEO as well as contextualization for all of my readers. The full reasoning is below.
REQUESTED BEHAVIOR:
-> When the plugin is installed, a new thread title character limit may be set by the Admin controlling the plugin
-> This thread title limit should be any positive integer up to 500.
-> Once it is set, all users should be able to submit posts with a title length as set in the plugin
-> Posts should appear with the full title in all views that show the title
NOT REQUIRED BEHAVIOR:
Not required: PM's (personal messages) do not need to have a longer title limit, as they will not be linked from all over the web, there is already a shared context (so no need to contextualize), it's personal so there is not as big of a "click-bait" aspect of getting people to click - they will read their PM's regardless - etc.
THANK YOU!
Thank you to anyone who can make this plugin! It will let me make my Forum the best and most important niche reference site on the planet for the niche that we are in.
Below is the reasoning for requesting this behavior.
FULL REASONING FOR REQUESTING THE PLUGIN
Here is an article originally posted on Proboards but which I resubmitted that got 51 upvotes and 101 comments on reddit:
It was very well received - despite in effect being an article titled "why do people hate Arduino" and submitted to /r/Arduino on Reddit. The 101 comments are a lot for that forum, and I got a lot of views!
Typical of that subreddit is fewer than 20 comments:
Now you might say the extra characters are not that important. But they simply are.
(It's 159 characters on the above, the title I gave it was: "Why do (some) people hate Arduino? a summary of my research into what electronics engineers are writing on the web - and what it means for Arduino enthusiasts".)
Here is Reddit's famous "TIL" (today I learned).
Those articles have thousands of upvotes and hundreds or sometimes thousands of comments. Not one of them comes close to fitting in the headline.
This is a point of difference and a competitive advantage to them. It makes it harder to write articles such as ones that I'm writing right now.
Here is an example of other titles that I can improve:
Poor title:
Walkthrough: add Bluetooth to your Arduino setup for $2.39
Better title:
Walkthrough: add a Bluetooth radio to your Arduino setup for $2.39
Walkthrough: add a Bluetooth radio to your Arduino setup (all versions) for $2.39
Best title:
Walkthrough: add a Bluetooth radio to your Arduino (any version) in just 7 minutes and for $2.39
-- no soldering required
You get the point.
Being able to include that information in the title makes it massively appealing from a contextualization standpoint.
Further, I'm trying to build a community: it has some people who are only interested in Arduinos; others, who are only interested in Raspberry Pi's; still others will be interested in 3D printing and design (CAD work).
It is really, really important to be able to add this context to titles without moving them to a subforum.
Another example: some of today's New York Times headlines (from the top emailed links):
Business or Politics? Examining Donald Trump’s Record for Clues to Cuba Policy
78 character
Secret Backdoor in Some U.S. Phones Sent Data to China, Analysts Say
68 characters
20 Things Donald Trump Said He Wanted to Get Rid of as President
64 characters
These are not long headlines. Some almost fit in 60 characters. Yet the New York Times chose to have them the way it did - and at times I would want to include the whole title when lining to it.
I want to submit any of these (or many other) links to my forum, without having to rewrite them. I also want to generate important original content.
The above examples don't contain much information. Let's take something that does - a title from Science or Nature (leading publications) or IEEE (leading publication).
Science:
Systematic mapping of functional enhancer–promoter connections with CRISPR interference
87 characters
Nature:
The flip side of personal genomics: When a mutation doesn't spell disease
78 characters
IEEE Spectrum:
"Back to the Future" Serves as Inspiration for Clothing With a Solar-Powered Battery
84 characters
Highest Performing Tungsten Disulfide Yet Brings Flexible 2D Circuits Closer
76 characters
Acoustics Simulation in Transducers, Mobile Devices & Hearing Aids
66 characters
China and the United States Tied for Number of Top 500 Supercomputers
69 characters
I personally would like to like articles that are informative and linked as widely from the web as New York Times, the IEEE Spectrum, Hacker News top submissions, Science, Nature, the Wall Street Journal, etc.
I want to build a forum that will have one of the largest niche readerships of any forum of the kind. Longer titles are absolutely required for me to do this.
Thank you for anyone who can help write this plugin!

Note:
- I have on very good authority that the approach I have quoted (a plugin using a thread key) would make this possible.
