Not saying these work, but here are some ideas...
Random thoughts thread What are you watching/listening to/reading? What's on your Netflix/YouTube/Hulu list? What movie/TV show did you last watch?
Any suggestions? Let's brainstorm!

It would definitely depend on what your theme for your forum is, is your theme Star Wars? Maybe ask them what their favourite Star Wars movie is and if they saw the newest one. It also depends on what kind of conversation styles you'd like your forum to have. Do you want members to really get to know each other or would you rather small talk/more post/thread counts. Good threads, in my opinion, to start on your forum would be: What made you decide to join our community/forum? What's one thing you would like people to know about you? Do you have any recommendations on how we could improve our forum/community? Ask your members questions, get to know them. Try to avoid small talk because you'll end up with a lot of threads with little to no replies or the replies will be short and people will get bored of your forum quickly. Well that's my suggestions Hope you enjoy!

It would definitely depend on what your theme for your forum is, is your theme Star Wars? Maybe ask them what their favourite Star Wars movie is and if they saw the newest one. I would recommend this for all theme-specific forums. Making OT threads is fine, but you don't want too many threads like those. You want your forum to showcase what you want it to be. Even making threads for each movie is great. What I've been doing with my forum was make all-purpose threads for a certain show. So if someone wanted to talk about Show X, they would go to the corresponding thread to comment and/or ask a question. It keeps things clean, and makes your forum look uniform and professional. Making all-purpose threads, in my opinion, would keep people from asking the same questions. Maybe this is something everyone can look into.

sure,
those could be classed as sub categories in a general discussion category.
But those are not the meat and spuds of your forum? unless they are?
Describe your forum and I will show you how to write proper posts for its category.
