HI! For the few that actually visit this neck of the woods... I have a question! I used to be super into drawing. Pen, pencil, paper, even dabbled in some charcoal. Could even say that I was decent at it way back when, except I've lost my mojo now that everything is digital-based. I tried to get back into it the last couple weeks and it's been a challenge I've come to the point where using a mouse and keyboard is easier than a pencil, and I got to thinking... is that normal? For you artists out there... do you still sketch and doodle either in real sketchbooks or just on paper? Or are you completely digital now, too?

I've gone all digital out of necessity. Investing in a yiynova tablet is cheaper in the long run than traditional supplies. honestly i prefer digital media anyway. But I do still draw in my sketchbooks, I always take one with me when i go out in case inspiration strikes. It always gets converted to digital if i want to show it off though.

Oh yes, I prefer the look you can achieve with digital media absolutely. But it can be hard to draw with a mouse most of the time, there's a certain curvature/organic feel I can get with pencil that I can't quite achieve... I haven't tried a standing tablet, only a wacom a really long time ago. Maybe I should give this new tech a chance?
I can't seem to keep my sketchbook around, either I get one that is too thick to bring around or too small and I lost it. What kind of sketchbook do you use? Do you tear the pages out to scan?

definitely. the yiynova is similar to cintiq for a fraction of the cost. the one i have is comparable to a second tier cintiq, about $2k... I paid $800. i like the monitor tablets much more than the traditional tablet but honestly i was really comfortable with the latter and have only had this tablet for a few months. but it's an easier transition from traditional to digital with a display tablet. i use a small b5 tankobon from muji, and no i don't scan my art in. i just take a photo with my phone and draw over with edits and adjustments via the tablet. here's a photo of something i did on paper kamidoodles.tumblr.com/post/133116750930/get-excited-yes-i-know-her-guns-are-on-the-wrongand after digital adjustments kamidoodles.tumblr.com/post/133847765595/i-rly-like-how-her-face-turned-out-much-bettertbh i also draw on my phone a fair bit, though the lack of pressure sensitivity is annoying

Oooo cheap is good Although I don't know if I can justify even $800 unless I know I will use it/like it. I am in need of a new laptop... do you know anything about the touchscreen 2-in-1's if they function similarly to a standing tablet? Would be super useful in more ways than one, I can justify paying a little more for something like that if the tech is up to par.

I think the problems you will experience with a two in one is they're a little less responsive than the display tablets; I've dabbled a little with various types and I've found the best response is with a surface pro (with the added bonus of a very tactile feel, almost like scratching a pencil over paper with the stylus, unlike display tablets which are smooth over glass). But surface pros are expensive even if you get an older generation, so... idk though if it's going to duo as your laptop then it's probably worth it.
Other than that I don't really have other recommendations; I didn't particularly enjoy the 2-in-1 a friend of mine at school had, or my mom's (the brands escape my unfortunately) because they felt a little flimsy. I'm a really involved artist though and press kind of hard on the tablet, so ymmv.

What medium did you use here? I like the inverse color look.

What medium did you use here? I like the inverse color look. It was all done via photoshop, and whatever brushset I'd selected XD

Honestly, I completely suck at hand drawing. I've tried it a few times and I suck. Maybe I will draw something up, just to show you how badly I do suck. LOL
