default personal text work around

I am aware that the personal text field doesn't appear unless it's filled out and therefore if/else won't work. This is not about that.


So I'm trying to figure out a work around for the fact that the personal text field displays nothing unless filled. Since we can't set default values within the software, I was thinking of using a work around, like this:

<div {if $[user.personal_text]}style="display:none;"{/if}>
text here
</div>

And I was HOPING that if the personal text field was filled out the "style: display:none;" would then trigger. Unfortunately, it doesn't.

Anyone willing to help me brain storm on how to try and work around software limitations? @khristian ? Tumbleweed? maybe? ;x

This thread confused me. I use

{if $[user.personal_text.message]}$[user.personal_text]{else}This is the default message for no status{/if}

On my forum just fine. I've never had any issue with it, but you're saying that it doesn't work? Am I misunderstanding what you wanted?

The default variable is user.personal_text, not user.personal_text.message. without the latter it won't work.
