Oh, yes, sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I was putting forth a definitive staff answer! Sorry if it came across like that (:
It's cool. I needed to clarify with Scott what I can or can't use, as my forum is very different to most others, in that I use a lot of custom pages, and Photobucket has caused me a lot of problems. My needs aren't that of simply storing random images, but images that form the skeleton of my website. I feel that as my custom pages are part of my forum, their content should fall under the term 'reasonable and fair use', but I will clarify this with a staff member via pm. Then I think you and I have completely crossed wires -- if you're using the upload system in conjunction with ProBoards (as in, your ProBoards forum, including custom pages since they're a part of the forum service PB offers), then I agree with you!
However your post came across as a suggestion to use the upload / attachment service outside of this capacity as an outright replacement for imgur/ photobucket / any other dedicated image host, for content that would not be used in conjunction with the forum (theme, post content, custom page content, or otherwise).

Nah, that was just an initial enquiry. Mostly my images are for navigation, or artwork, relating to the site itself. loveevertonforum.com/page/site-map

Then for clarification my post was not aimed at your usage, but rather the overall idea that PB should become in addition to a forum service, a dedicated image host, separate from but in conjunction with its function as a forum provider.

Gotcha. Then for clarification my post was not aimed at your usage, but rather the overall idea that PB should become in addition to a forum service, a dedicated image host, separate from but in conjunction with its function as a forum provider.
Well that's something they 'could' consider in the future, but clearly isn't available in the instant, at least in the case of random storage. My earlier point was that if we were going to go down that route, it might be a good idea to consider it asap, that way it could cancel out the issues we're having with hosting companies like Photobucket, but I'm only talking about admin hosting for the site, and not personal hosting for each member etc. Never would I expect something on the scale of a purpose built hosting company. If the admin is paying for it, it would be a good earner for the company too. The facility is already there in the admin panel after all. All it needs is to be tweaked, and that could be done for v6. Yes, I agree it is something they could consider, but even if it is only for the admin of the forum that still requires resources, including manpower and time, as well as additional equipment to make it available for every one of their 700,000+ forum admins and counting (regardless of whether or not the admin in question makes use of it, it still needs to be able to be capable of handling such usage).
I don't, however, think there is any particular reason why v6 needs to take a back seat to this. It is literally in the middle of production, which goodness knows how many manhours have already been sunk into the process. Obviously, I am not privy to the inner workings of ProBoards, but from a general development point of view it is my experience that halting a project to discuss and implement a new one usually results in a massive time loss, if not financial loss, even if the first project were to proceed at a later date.
Just because what we see on the front end exists doesn't mean that a "tweak" is all that's needed to bring the functionality you're suggesting to the feature. I mean, it could! Don't get me wrong. But it could also very well not, since the intent of the feature was never to become a host beyond the capacity of the forum's functions, even if only for the forum owner.
Obviously this is all just generalities.
Honestly though, I guess I just fail to see the need for ProBoards to become an image host in any capacity beyond what is required for themes / forum appearance. Yeah, Photobucket just bit the dust like imgur did a year before it, but there are still (as evidenced in the first thread) several viable alternatives at the moment. I don't, personally, think that ProBoards needs to, is obligated to, or would really benefit from offering additional image hosting (regardless of limitations put to it) when other people and companies will fill that niche. Perhaps not as robust at the moment as Photobucket was, but the unreliability of such services is -- as I mentioned -- because the revenue they take in is not enough to offset the costs, so even PB could wind up in this situation.
(Please note that the last paragraph is not intended to create an argument, or say that anyone is wrong, just that I personally don't think that PB's services are lacking in this regard)

This is frustrating. A lot of my earliest work on ProBoards from 10+ years ago is on PhotoBucket.
ImgBox said they're going to shutdown (and reversed it, but good chance they'll shut down). TinyPic is also owned by PhotoBucket and may face something similar soon.
I'm glad I made my own and left all of these hosts.

It's just that the 3rd party hosting has been stopped, so you'd need to right click on each image, copy the image address, paste it into Google, and then download the image before re-hosting. A long process for sure.

Sadly, as P'Bucket is going through accounts and finding those who are using their links on 3rd party sites, they are being locked out of their accounts until the $400 is paid.
However, if you right click on the image P'Bucket puts in the image's place on the 3rd party's site, you can open the address in a new tab and see the image and download it to your computer.
Hopefully, most have their original photos on their own external drives, thumb drives, etc. I do. They don't have anything I need ~ except the right for me to place those images on 3rd party sites as was the company's original intent for the site.

Hi there. Well I've just logged on to ask a question relating to Photobucket and it appears the problem has been discussed at length. Over the past week or so when using photobucket the ads and pop ups have got worse and worse. Today I find the Forum won't accept 3rd party hosting. My forum is a fishing one and without pics of fish it loses 90 % of its effectiveness.. im not techs so could I ask a simple question. Is there an alternative way to post full pictures on the forum cheers I use this on two forums, www.proboards.com/library/plugins/item/148Works for us.

forumac , besides the plugin listed above, you can also use ProBoards' attachment feature (it does have a storage limit and once reached you can either delete photos or pay for additional ProBoards' storage).
And there's other free hosting sites that still permit 3rd party linking such as ~ village.photos, nickpic.host, postimage.io/ imageshack.us/
I hope this helps.

A long process for sure. It's just rather depressing to think of the old threads, old things across ProBoards... No longer having those images with them. From imgbox site: Sounds like the opposite of shutting down. ImgBox made the decision of shutting down. Several others shut down. I.Minus, ImgBox, YFrog, SomeImage, Gifyu, Wi.To (both shut down and came back numerous times). They come back. Shut down again. Come back. Sometimes it is a donation revenue ploy. Other times they seriously cut back. ImageShack removed several of their servers, and terabytes of data a while ago, for even active images! These sites are purging old content. Imgur is blocking hotlinking. ImgBox seems to be evolving toward what Imgur is. It is terrifying. I now recommend getting a small hosting plan for yourself, and host your own images or find a great image host you trust and like. Kami Could be a disgruntle employee who didn't get the weekend off? LOL! No. Probably not. ♥ ℒʊ√ ♥ Ah so Photobucket are the ones telling people they are being hacked? It sure does sound weird. I just now came back from making a copy of what I had in my photobucket account. Wow that was memory lane. I think I should just delete my account from them. I'm not on facebook so at least I won't have to see what they've been saying over there. My friend is safe. He never used facebook for his website in the first place, thank goodness. Hey.... Has anyone HERE, or has any PROBOARD admins reported having any of their sites images down because of photobucket yet? 0 My old Roleplay websites have their images down. But, people got the picture rather fast what happened. A lot of older communities use PhotoBucket. A lof of these older communities felt alienated by the rampant tightening rules on ProBoards Support so they rarely come here. They're very active on other resource websites, because, these resouce websites have "volunteer" support catered to them, for their questions, when ProBoards users here, aren't the best to answer them. This is a huge issue to a lot of people, and a lot of classic archives. It feels as if part of the internet is lost. Honestly, if Photobucket's been hacked, you know they would have heard by now and called everyone off vacation holiday. They would have all been back at work getting all of this straightened out. I seriously doubt they would allow a hacker to take over like this. I mean, that is the most likely scenario, yes, but a little caution never hurt anything. I agree with you though it seems unlikely! I agree. Photobucket seems to be riding this out. They updated their FAQ site about this as well. This was a planned endevour as seen here. Their login form isn't secure. That is a true issue and it is an issue, to not have a secure login. But, Photobucket is an ancient site. It doesn't surprise me. The etire reason why it is reporting not secure, is that they're calling their javascript and CSS from non-secure parts of their server. They also have a $10 off coupon code for this $399.99 charge... forumac , besides the plugin listed above, you can also use ProBoards' attachment feature (it does have a storage limit and once reached you can either delete photos or pay for additional ProBoards' storage).

I hope this helps. Thank you for the recommendation! I do appreciate it! However, my site is targeted toward a limited audience. ImageShack also will delete old content, and will begin to charge for too much traffic.

Something occurred to me while I was trying to restore a few of the images we lost following the Photobucket debacle.
Currently there is a plugin called Simple Image Upload, which makes it possible for people with even the most basic computer skills to upload images to forums that have installed the plugin. The images are hosted on Postimage.org. Would it be possible to integrate something like this to Proboards' regular platform (for lack of a better word)? Maybe even with several possible host sites to choose from?
Let's face it: nowadays Proboards' real competition is not really other forum hosts. It's Facebook Groups. Each of my two music forums is in competition with several music FB groups. Even the most technologically challenged person can post images to FB, they are all hosted on site. A couple of clicks and you're done. Some of my members don't even understand the concept of image hosting, so it really needs to be simple. There are many people like that all over the internet and I think that this is what explains, at least in part, the attraction of FB groups.
Anyway, this is just something I wanted to throw your way while I ponder how I'm going to plug all the holes left on my two forums by the Photobucket Mess.

I think this is an idea worth considering, and likely more feasible than turning PB into an image hosting site in its own right. I think the issue would be logistics though; the simple image plugin uses postimg because the plugin creator either owns, or is part of postimg. If PB were to offer a built-in functionality, they'd need to enter business partnerships with the hosting sites, which obviously would be not just a $ issue, but would still run into the problems of finding willing hosts that would not mind being used as a content delivery network that are also free.

They are going after people/sellers who use places like Ebay and Amazon. Not real "corporate" business but people who can't afford other ways of doing it. But you said "higher paying clients". Those types of clients aren't high paying. That's why they used Photobucket's free service. I was a power seller on eBay and hosted my images on eBay.
These are for profit sellers and I'm sure even they now recognize the fact that allowing a 3rd party to host their images is downright dumb ~ particularly when the site they sell on allows image hosting.
Much like I'm kicking myself in the butt for not utilizing ProBoards for ALL of my images for my themes and not just some. I was one of those ninnies myself.
I think this was a last ditch effort for the bucket and I'm not so sure they'll last out another year. If comments on their blog and Facebook pages are typical, most are leaving because they can no longer trust the company. I might consider paying the money for a year in order to get my themes sorted, but my distrust in the company and my doubts they'll be there for another year weigh heavily against that decision.
$400 to host for a year is NOT competitive. There are far better options out there. If they can't afford other ways of doing it, they certainly can't afford this inflated price. Purchasing a domain and having it hosted costs less. And at least, then they are in control of their fate.
Who would want history to repeat itself? Fool me once, shame on you . . . .

Just today I noticed that when I go to post a new thread on my forum, I'm getting a popup box on the left side of that create thread page, that is asking me to "update your account to allow third party hosting". I came here and found this thread on Photobucket, which is the website/company mentioned in this popup. However, I dont' understand what's being asked. What is third party hosting? What is "image hosting" which I am reading about in comments on this thread? I'm reading that proboards doesn't do "image hosting" ...what does this mean? Does this refer to image attachments on posts, or to images we link to via URL on the posts? or both? Have I been unaware all along that it's not actually proboards which allows such images to be put in the posts, but another company, called PhotoBucket? What are the changes that are taking place? As far as I'm aware, I have never had an account directly with PhotoBucket (unless, though I didn't know about it, that was taking place implicitly through having a Proboards forum), so what does it mean to be asked to update my account with them when I never had an account with them in the first place? Is my ability to post images as either attachments or as URL links in posts, now at risk...will this be lost? (WOuld be pretty bad, because I post a lot of links to images on other sites, to make the posts more interesting). Or would images only be lost if I had originally used Photobucket to store them or got them from Photobucket? I dont' have an account with them that I know of...but is there some way that anyone with a Proboards forum automatically had an account with them, that I didn't know about? Lots of questions and lots of confusion. I'd really appreciate some clarification: (1) Will it be possible to continue to post image attachments on posts, without using PhotoBucket? (2) will it be possible to continue to post URL links to a variety of images on the web, without using Photobucket? Eg like this image I'm posting here on this post, which is a screenshot I took, and which I then posted on another Wordpress website that I own. So my image has a URL that is on a website I own. Or, I might find an image on a news story -- like the New York Times, and post that on my forum, to illustrate a point I'm trying to make. Would that still be possible.
