Hi,
I've currently been playing with ChatWING but just removed it from my forum. I don't like the way it sits within the header or footer. Unable to find a way to make this option as an icon - I decided it was not for me.
Having add-ons/plugins that do not subside or disappear when loading up the more important content of the forum leaves makes it hard for me to engage in peoples threads and or make posts.
I'd really like that ability for my forum to have a chat server but something in a less detracting manner. Of course it may depend on the type of theme that your forum is based upon as to whether permanently embedded side bars, chat boxes, flashing adds, animated avatars and pictures look with regard to distraction or not. They may in fact be appealing in some forum categories.
My forum theme is on mediation so it's not hard to see why I may wish for such add-ons to be a more discreet option in order to maintain an atmosphere of peace.
I'm still stumbling my way through forum design and only just now coming to see how these different applications can alter a forums atmosphere in varying ways.

I hope all of that came out the right way. It really is just about maintaining my forums theme.
I guess it's a double edge sword - as I feel in many cases a lot of people don't use chat when it's not so easily seen. Certainly a fact to consider. I guess making a sticky that's everyone can see with an icon that's well placed + an unobtrusive yet eye catching link would help to make the forum chat more active?
I think the reason that certain forums I frequent result in members querying the lack of interaction regarding chat, is because it's more a case that this services is not advertised or spoken about. At least not till members complain that no one seems to use it. Other factors my include no graphical reminder by way of sticky, icons or links. That being the balance between an embedded box screaming out for attention Vs a tiny button that no one ever sees.
This is why I currently don't use side bars whilst still liking them. (Keep in mind I am a newbie forum builder whose knowledge is limited with plugins at this stage) If only these plugins would subside automatically when loading up another forum page?
It would be the ultimate in web page like ability on a forum based platform to have such plugins that remove themselves like so when navigating into thread and post mode. An ability to control the atmosphere when changing from one page of the forum to the next would be awesome to say the least. As it stands - plugins or services that don't account for this dynamic are in my case too restricting and of no benefit; they only detract.
I thought it was important that my reasoning be understood. The atmosphere of my propose forum means a lot to me. I again relate this as just my view and my forums themes. Sorry for the long winded post.
Can anyone recommend a chat server that may be implemented in a unobtrusive way?
Additionally - this being a long shot ... if anyone knows of a side bar that automatic subsides when navigating away from the home page - Please do tell.
TY.
