I've got this new interests notification plugin and this html tells it where to display the text link:
<span id="interestsmenu"></span>
Atm the text is white and it's horribly mis-aligned in my divs so i'm adding css:
#notlist li {
font: inherit;
color: #585c61;
font-size: 50px;
display: block;
}
For some reason NONE of that works unless i put background-color: blue; and that works. It's like some css works and some doesn't. (that notlist li id is the one i found through google chrome inspector, it's the only one which seems to affect it). I feel like i'm going mad xD normal css is not working how it should and i'm trying to learn it the same time.

Anything you want - also try stripping out font: inherit;
By telling it inherit your telling it to basically do what the default settings is for all font properties

Ah, i have a feeling this plugin has it's own css settings built in, so in order for it to function normally i'm going to have to override every single css declaration they've made. Which finding out through the inspector is a ballache v_v

Just for reference, your important syntax is backwards.
You have "important!" it should be "!important"
^ exclamation point first
Not sure if this will solve your problem, but incorrect syntax is incorrect syntax, and it should be changed if you intend on using it (:
Also your CSS ID name doesn't match your span ID, so I'm not sure why they span was mentioned...?

Yea i fixed the !. This plugin: www.proboards.com/library/plugins/item/1078He's said to put: <span id="interestsmenu"></span> where you want it to appear, so i've added it to my custom dropdown menu: <ul class="dropdown profile-dropdown fallback"> <li><a href="$[current_user.href]"><i class="fa fa-user"></i> Profile</a></li> <li><a href="/conversations"><i class="fa fa-envelope"></i> Messages</a></li> <li><a href="$[current_user.href]/personal"><i class="fa fa-cogs"></i> Edit Settings</a></li> <li><span id="interestsmenu"></span></li> {if $[current_user.can_admin]} <li><a href="/admin"><i class="fa fa-wrench"></i> Admin</a></li> {/if} <li class="separator"></li> <li><a href="$[logout_link.href]"><i class="fa fa-sign-out"></i> Logout</a></li> </ul> and it shows as this:

where is #notlist li?
The span is also with an ID, not a class -- classes are .classname while IDs are #idname

I found #not list li from digging in the browser inspector and thought that would possibly be responsible for the css. But it's just as broken, Seems alot of people are having trouble applying css to this plugin. So if i want to add css to this, what selector should i be using?

if you are trying to style the span, yes.
however keep in mind that span elements display inline and will inherent the properties of their parent containers so you might have to do a lot of !important overrides.
Edit: remember also there is no space between the important declaration and the rest of the CSS, e.g.:
color: #000!important;
