Home page with promoted thread

Can I have a thread appear at the top of the categories list, or are threads not technically accessible from the home page?

mikemcd , have you thought about using the News Feed for this?

Go to Admin > Settings > Forum Settings, News Feed. Have the News Sources as 'Explicit-From this Page', then put in the field the link to the thread like below changing the "10" to the thread ID and the "Thread Name Here" to what you want to show in feed. If you only have one item listed, then it will be static and not change.

If you put this code in the Main Header you can change the news feed title to Promoted Thread:
