That's... really subjective. Every RP forum is different, so you won't get a very detailed answer.
The things they have in common are:
- All members play at least one character
That's literally it. I can't even say that all forums have plots or character applications or are based off of something, because I have seen RP forums that don't have those things.
In general though, most RP forums follow a simple play-by-post structure. Players use their character to move a story along with other characters, post by post.
