On a completely default forum theme the navigation menu is produced in Themes > Layout Templates > Forum Wrapper by the following lines: You can move these wherever you want, but if your intention is to create a custom menu rather than moving the existing one you're much better off using the foreach loop to create your own menu with whatever HTML you like rather than relying on the HTML that produces the default menu.

what i was wanting to do was have the menu bar inside its own container or wrapper - i managed to do that thanks to your post - so thank you!!!
