How do I add a small pad above my banner/header?

I just want some space (preferably filled with my background image) above my banner/header.

You can go to your Advanced Styles & CSS in the Admin Panel -> Themes, switch to the 'Style Sheet' tab and scroll all the way to the bottom. Add this line:

#wrapper { margin-top: 50px; }

You can change the 50px to whatever amount of space you want.
