can the labels variable be put into an if?

So I have no idea if what I want to accomplish is even possible, but I thought that I might ask about it.

Basically, I have a container row, column, and div for my labels in my thread list, and it doesn't completely disappear when the labels do. Is there a way to make that happen with if statements? Or just any way in general?

I already know that

{if $[thread.labels]}$[thread.labels]{/if}

isn't valid, I'm assuming because the label content class is always present.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?
