So I have an old Sony Vaio I have stored away. I was using my HP all in one desktop recently and it like powered off. I can't turn it back on. When I say powered off, it was like the power actually went out but the light in my bedroom was still on so it was just the computer itself.
I don't want to be spending the money they are asking to have the place check it. So I was wondering would it do damage if I tried using the power cord from the Sony Vaio all in one on the HP all in one?
I was just wondering if that would work so I can see if it is the battery/power issue before spending a ton of money I really don't have.

Your sony vaio power cord may be the right voltage, but it will most likely not fit into your HP A-I-O. support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05018075

The end that plugs into the computer were different sizes. The HP one was fatter as the Sony one was smaller.

I think it would be worth buying a replacement AC power cord for your HP All-in-one before jumping the gun. If the cord is older / has been used a lot and only works if manipulated into a certain position, the wiring may be frayed inside / connections no longer complete.

Yeah that might be a problem though, I have no idea what kind of cord to buy? I mean do I just buy a HP brand or do I try to look for whatever the exact model is of my computer? Which I have no idea how to find out since I don't know where the paper work is for it. The cord looks pretty decent. But it is old. Not sure if they last as long as a laptop cord or not. But the computer is almost 5 years old.

If it's not the cord, then it is either the power supply (what powers the computer via your power cord), the storage disk being corrupted or has died, or your motherboard (the brain of your computer) is fried. Hopefully it's one of the first 3 things, and not the motherboard since that is what all of the other components are stuck onto and would not be worth replacing. Hopefully a new power cord will fix it!

But I won't know for a while since I am totally broke right now. I am hoping it's only a cord issue, since the guy said that would be the cheapest thing to fix.

You won't always smell anything if the PSU failed, but if it's a result of a blown component (capacitors for example) then yeah, you'd likely smell something akin to ammonia. If your laptop's case is easy enough to open (don't bother if you feel uncomfortable removing a few screws), I'd pop the bottom off and take a look for any obvious signs of physical failure. Bulged, swollen, or bent components, or blackened areas on the boards themselves, could be an indicator of a failure with the PC itself. Either way, I agree with your repair tech. It's always a good rule of thumb to swap out inexpensive pieces first. Especially since you can simply return the part should it not solve your issue.

All it needed was a new fan. It's the Desktop that is the problem. That is the one that powered out. Yeah I can't deal with the desk top any time soon. I will have to wait. Since the starting price is $170 and then they go from there (they either go up or down in the price, depending on the problem that needs to be fixed). Great so this will worry me now if it's something else other than the power cord.
