Since proboards is largely rp which I haven't done in years I often wonder why so many create rp forums. Did you have a bad experience on another board and want things done exactly your way? I've also wondered why so many are so strict with specific plots, or do you view the plot as more of an era rather then if the member wants to go their own way with it?
I guess I'm asking why so strict? Were you in it just hoping to be the next big board or just happy with a handful of active users rather then the member count?

The one that I am part of is not really strict. It has rules, but they are mainly revolving around how many characters you can have, etc. I have never been on a strict RP forum, nor would it really entice me.

I haven't joined up at a RPG forum in awhile, but based on observations, it wouldn't be too difficult of a guess to figure out some generic reasons why people try making their own forums (actually interested in giving running one a go, some forum being too strict on policy of how to RP in a specific topic or character use, or just too tough on writing). If I were to join up one now, I would rather join up on one that has lax rules and guidelines, so that I literally do not take up a full day to just formulate how to carry on the story line.

I didn't create mine, but took over one that was dying due to the admin's hectic schedule. The one I run now is a carryover from that board which we eventually disbanded because the admin wouldn't hand it over even though she was never there. That was in 2009. Right now, it's going through a rebirth phase again, but I have every hope we'll pick up speed as soon as my husband and we finish our move to another state. As for plots, a lot of members need some guidance when it comes to RPing something to do. I usually alternate between a set plot and free RP, which gives them the chance to do their own smaller side plots. I also give well-established members the chance to run a plot once in a while. I've never been in it for the member count. I'd rather have a handful of dedicated members who post frequently, then a huge member count number and no one who posts. We have had some HUGE story arcs that carry through other plots and the members eventually began to recognize that something small one of my characters might say may have huge implications later. Now they look for those clues, trying to figure it out as we go. I'm fine with members having their own side plots, but I've asked that they don't do anything in them that can harm the starship or a large portion of the crew, as I need those for the plots I have planned, LOL. If they want to do something more "destructive," I ask that they run it by me first. The thing people have the hardest time understanding when they try to join my RP is that they can't create an all-powerful character or someone who is a spy or someone who invents his own personal cloaking device. Those kinds of characters are bad, bad, bad for the plots I create, because they always want to be the one who solves everything the first day the plot is introduced, which is no fun for the other members at all. I try to keep it fair. Many would think my Rules are very intensive, but you only have to read them once, and they are there after so many years of RPing to keep the RP fair for everyone. My biggest mandate is that you respect your fellow RPers. Don't disappear without letting us know, don't try to always be the hero, let the others have their time in the spotlight, simple respect for the other writers.
